Awarapan: A Delight for Pakistanis!

The Bhatts’ affinity for actors and musicians from Pakistan is common knowledge – a fact that is evident in all their recent releases Nazar, Woh Lamhe, Gangster, Kalyug and Zeher.

Their forthcoming title, Awarapan, however, takes the Pakistan connection to a new level altogether. Not only has a section of the climax been secretly shot in Lahore but every singer on the film’s chartbusting soundtrack, without exception, hails from Pakistan, making it the first for a mainstream Bollywood flick. The main vocals for the two key songs (To Phir Aao and Tere Mera Rishta) belong to Mustafa Zahid, who founded the famous Pakistani band, Rox3n. The other track, Maula Maula, is by Rafaqat Ali Khan, while the lively Maahiya, has been rendered by the 22-year old Annie, whose track took Pakistan by storm when it debuted in 2006.
And this isn’t enough! Shreya Saran (who plays Emraan Hashmi’s romantic interest in the film) is a Muslim character in the film. Her get-up and mannerisms were specially worked on!

Music Review : Mp3 – Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar

Once in a whole comes a small film that makes you sit up and take notice of it due a fresh appeal it brings along with it. Especially when a flick boasts of belonging to a teen-romance genre due to a title like MP3 – Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar, one is bound to check out what the film is all about. With a fresh starcast and a young director [Robby Grewal, who debuted with a dark thriller ‘Samay‘ a few years back] at the helm, MP3 is produced by Percept Picture Company in association with Red Ice Films. The soundtrack is composed by Ashu-Dhruv.

The man who rarely gets it wrong, K.K., is entrusted the responsibility to render the title song ‘Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar‘. Vipin Mishra writes as well as gives music for this song which is about the protagonist realizing what the first ever feeling of love is all about. A track belonging to rock genre, it starts off like any other sugar coated love song but picks up in a matter of a minute as it gather pace and reaches a crescendo when the golden words ‘Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar Hai Yeh‘ come. Surprisingly there is an unwanted interruption of rap soon after which just doesn’t seem necessary in a sweet love song like this. A ‘remix‘ version comes rather too early in the album though it becomes an easy fodder for DJs to play on for the dance floors. Looking at the theme of the track, one was a little apprehensive about how would it fit in into the remix mode. Thankfully, it turns out to be quite an enjoyable experience in this version and one looks forward to see a promotional music video being built around this version.

It’s time for some pop music with the arrival of ‘Kaun Hoon Main‘. Whether it is lyrics, composition or the rendition, there is youth written all over this Kiran Kotrial written track which has a mix of English and Hindi lyrics. Expect a kind of choreography as witnessed in ‘Pehla Nasha‘ more than a decade and a half back as the song belongs to a similar genre and carries a young-n-fresh feel along with it. Both Suhail Kaul and Tara Baswani do justice to the characters in the film by means of their singing as they get the teenage effect just right through their vocals. With minimal interference from multiple instruments, ‘Kaun Hoon Main‘ is a smooth ride which has two more parts to it in the second half of the album. Expect the track to be making an appearance throughout the narrative of the film. Guitar is an instrument which kick starts Aslam Noor written ‘Dosti‘, a track which is obviously about friendship. For a young track like this, who else but Shaan is roped in to come behind the mike. A peppy number which is high on beats and moves at a fast pace, ‘Dosti‘ also sees Suhail Kaul pairing up with Shaan. Reminding of the title track of ‘Rok Sako To Rok Lo‘ which released a few years back, ‘Dosti‘ is nothing exceptional but still makes for a decent hear.

It is A.R.Rahman revisited with ‘Chori Chori‘ which is out and out based on the maestro’s style of composition. A youthful track about school students finding out a secret love
story blooming between the lead protagonists of the film, it should be fun to watch. Written by Kiran Kotrial, ‘Chori Chori‘ is a fun track rendered by Suhail Khan and Rajeev Sundaresan. Apart from a lively singing which is a mainstay of the song, ‘Chori Chori‘ also boasts of some dialogues interspersed into it that are bound to bring on a smile. An impressive track with a slight jazz to it, it deserves to be a part of the film’s promotion soon.
Making way for the Bollywood scheme of things, ‘Naa Jaane‘ gets into a ‘bhangra‘ groove and sets your feet tapping even as you are hearing the track for the first time. Though there isn’t much out of the box in this short 2 minutes song (no harm in that), ‘Naa Jaane‘ is fun to hear as Ravindra goes about rendering this decently paced song that comes with a lively feel with it. Rest of the album is made of short musical pieces, namely ‘Climax’, ‘Love Theme’, ‘Plan‘ and ‘Paris‘. While ‘Climax‘, as expected, is fast paced and quite energetic with an assortment of western instruments making it an enjoyable fare, ‘Love Theme‘ is short and sweet as it sails smoothly. ‘Plan‘, as suited for its setting in the film, has an intriguing feel to it and takes a serpentine approach by bringing on different shades. This is a musical piece that makes one to watch out for what the film has in the offering. Ditto for ‘Paris’ that has a lavish appeal to it and brings on an exciting sound that makes one curious about looking forward to MP3.

MP3 is a good album that fully delivers what a young love story should be offering. Ashu and Dhruv come up with a soundtrack that justifies the setting of the film and maintains a consistency throughout. There may not be a track which could stand out and take MP3 to a chartbuster status but as a whole this album is a decent hear which you can play on for an engaging and harmless hear.

Jhoom Barabar Jhoom Music Review

After “Dhoom”, it’s “Jhoom”! The triumvirate of esteemed Yash Raj banner, Bachchan’s and director Shaad Ali Saigal are all set for a cinematic holocaust in magnanimous JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM. Yash Raj’s most coveted project finally lands up in marquee with the musical expertise of versatile musical trio Shankar Ehsaan Loy (SEL). The album comes off as some kind of surprise as it forays four different styled versions of title tracks (“Jhoom”, “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom”, “JBJ” and “Jhoom Jam”). Besides three booty-shaking thumping title tracks, there is a blend of Sufi and Indi-pop that comes from the brilliance of Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and Neeraj Shridhar.

Shankar Mahadevan’s boisterously pitched Punjabi dialect and feverishly punched “bhangra” rock that rocked nation in “Pretty Woman” (KAL HO NA HO), “Nach Baliye” (BUNTY AUR BABLI) and “Rock “n” Roll Soniye” (KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA) strikes back with pompous thump in chartbusting “Jhoom”. Gulzar’s amusing lyrics voices out ethnic Punjabi “boliyan” (verses) that well describes the emotions of “happy-go-lucky” gypsy in a cheerfully celebratory mood. It’s a fun frolicking treat that sets equilibriums between Shankar’s “ragas” based vocals, fast paced “bhangra” beats and ear-splitting westernized percussions in setting pulsating tempo for a rollicking dance floor track. “Jhoom” works more like a title track and a youthful anthem than revamped or resurrected version of evergreen “Qawaali” “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” (sung mainly by veteran Aziz Naza in 70’s and 80’s). This entertaining offering will be a visual spectacle where Big B’s ethnically designed European gypsy attire (costumes – Akki Narula) will be forming emblematic communion with acrobatic jiving choreographic skills (Vaibhavi Merchant) in pulling out a real chartbuster.

“Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” brings out a camaraderie of vociferously belligerent voices that rocks the floors in a blood racing concert show extravaganza. This title track version has scintillating multi-faceted spark where KK, Sukhwinder Singh, Mahalaxmi Iyer and Shankar Mahadevan voices out for the hot-shot bandwagon. It’s a gleaming amalgamation of racy vocals, Bagpiper tunes, keyboard rendered notes, electric and acoustic guitars strumming with thunderous and ear-deafening traditional “dhol” beats and loud thumps. Sukhwinder Singh and KK voice out the soundtrack in classical “alaaps” and folkish “bhangra” mode with dash of femininity in the shimmering vocals of Mahalaxmi Iyer. Shankar Mahadevan’s impressive rendition gives it a finale by summing up deliriously “chock-a-block” proceeding with fine blending of all voices singing out the “mukhda” to give it a euphoric touch. It’s an urbane delight contribution that has the credentials of hitting big in the marquee. Rock the floors!

“JBJ” is “yuppie” title track that promises to be teenybopper’s delight for its deliriously paced hip-hop rendition (Blaze and Shantanu) with reverberating “club” mix impact. SEL earlier composed “B n B” (BUNTY AUR BABLI) had the similar trendy emblematic feel that worked excellently as promotional tool. Zubin Garg enters SEL camp with this feverishly upbeat number where he is clubbed with Sunidhi Chauhan and Shankar Mahadevan’s screechy “n” booming vocals in churning out perky feel. “JBJ” can be configured as sprightly animated background score or visually alluring promotional track garnering promising opening for the film.

After “Baat Paaki” (JUST MARRIED) and “Bhagam Bhag” (BHAGAM BHAG), Neeraj Shridhar (lead vocalist of BOMBAY VIKING) makes another promising marketable hullabaloo in sluggishly paced chirpy soundtrack “Ticket to Hollywood”. It’s slothfully paced number about wooing French girl in bountiful of crispy and garrulous one-liners like “Oas Mein Gholi, Mint ki Goli, Niri Khushboo Beeba, Kanney se Kate, Manjhe ki dori, kattege tu biba…” Alisha Chinai’s resentfully “silky-smooth” vocals give it romantic shades while Loy Mendonsa’s vigorous voluble rap works aggressively in making it cult situational soundtrack.

It all started with “Mann ki Lagaan” (PAAP) and was carried out in soulfully pristine “Jiya Dhadak Dhadak” (KALYUG) and “Main Jahaan Rahoon” (NAMASTEY LONDON). Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s genius adds another gifted contribution in filmdom with “Bol Na Halke Halke”, a soft and verbose melody rendered in a mould of refined romantic duet. SEL imbues the traits of their everlasting melodic works “Tum Hi Dekho Naa” (KABHI ALVIDA NA KEHNA) and “Chup Chup Ke” (BUNTY AUR BABLI) into effective classical musical packaging. Gulzar’s poetic ebullience brings nostalgia of timeless romance in lines like “Umrein Lage Kehte huin, Do lafaz they ek baat thi, Woh ek din sau saal ka, Sau saal ki woh raat thi, Kaise lage jo chupcahap dono, Palpal mein puri saadiyan beetadein…” It can be well clubbed into “Best Lyrics” cadre and can be counted as one of the finest melodies of the year. SEL versatile genius enamors Rahat Fateh Ali Khan’s vocal prowess that gets complemented well with Mahalaxmi Iyer’s smoothening and enlightening voice.

“Kiss of Love” is another f
ine example of comradeship and amity in musical fraternity as Vishal Dadlani (of Vishal-Shekhar fame) throats out again as a vocalist after Pritam’s “Dhoom Again” (DHOOM 2). Chopra’s-Johar’s favorite Vasundhra Das finally makes her presence in this pompous carnival track that can be worked out impressively as Salsa dancing track. This extra vociferous and boisterously composed reminds of tracks like “Dil Laga Na” (DHOOM 2) and “Ab to Forever” (TA RA RUM PUM) for its blood racing vigorous impact. It will be more visually enticing as the rollicking music will be enthralled in alluring choreographic skills.
The curtain falls off with an instrumental work “Jhoom Jam”, an emblematic presentation containing collage of all signature tunes mixed with thumping “Bhangra” beats. The loud drumming of “dhol” reminds of MOHABBATEIN theme music with metaphorical feel of JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM.

JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM triumphs back Yashraj banner to top slot in musical ranking after the shocking disappointment of TA RA RUM PUM and clubs itself with this year super hits like NAMASTEY LONDON and LIFE IN A…METRO. SEL, the most prolific composers of last year maintains their golden streak of success with JHOOM BARABAR JHOOM. The album promises bountiful of fun-loving entertainment and embark new anthem “Jhoom Barabar Jhoom” to Gen X listeners after “Dhoom Machale” from the esteemed banner in its trendy paced offerings.

Ashutosh Gowariker’s Jodhaa Akbar is the untold love story of the greatest Mughal emperor who ruled Hindustan (now India), Jalaluddin Mohammad Akbar, and a fiery young Rajput princess, Jodhaa.
Set in the sixteenth century, this epic romance begins as a marriage of alliance between two cultures and religions, for political gain, with the Hindu King Bharmal of Amer giving his daughter’s hand to a Muslim Emperor, Akbar.
