Khoya Khoya Chand

is set amid the film industry of the 50s, and is a complicated love story. True, all love stories are, but one is rather used to seeing them on-screen simply told. And it’s tragic. There’s nascent love, and there are willing lovers; these circumstances, this world and its wants and expectations just won’t let them be.

Nikhat (Soha Ali Khan) is a starlet, a dancer, who desires “acting” roles now. She is spotted by mega-star Prem Kumar (Rajat Kapoor) and he casts her as his leading lady, much to the chagrin of his current leading lady Ratanbala (Soniya Jehan). As clout dictates, he also expects other favors from Nikhat which she accedes to

However Prem marries another (Dipannita Sharma) in keeping with his parents’ wishes, and explains it as such to Nikhat. Nikhat is angered but must swallow her pride to remain in Prem’s (a powerful man in the industry) good books. Even though Prem is now married, he expects Nikhat’s company on the side, while she, in turn, is forming an attachment with tell-it-like-it-is budding written Zafar (Shiney Ahuja).

It’s a vile world out there. In KKC, it appears stark, and unvarnished; the apparent attempts at recreating the 50s leaving grim reality untouched. In the midst of all this is gentle-souled Nikhat. Pimped out at 14, by her single mother, Nikhat has endured numerous casting couches to get where she is today, and is no innocent. Presenting a smiling hard shell to the world, she remembers each indignity. Soha does well as Nikhat, merging the soft and the edgy parts of her personality beautifully. She appears brittle, eyes glittering, hinting at a very thin ven eer of sophistication before all that pent-up hurt comes pouring out.

For all its quality and worthiness, KKC might be a hard commercial sell, for who has time for the subtleties of love, when modern-day love stories have appreciative audiences dancing to a Love Guru’s tunes (Salman Khan’s character in ‘Partner’)?

Ishaan is 8 years old. His world is full of wonders like kites, dogs, colours and fish, but to his dismay they are just not important for adults, who want him to be interested in boring stuff like homework, marks and cleanliness. And so for them Ishaan just cannot get anything right.

Finally his parents cannot handle him, and Ishaan is packed off to a boarding school ‘to be disciplined’. But things are worse here – the teachers are similar to those back home, and Ishaan misses his family.

And then Ishaan meets the new Art teacher, Ram Shankar Nikumbh, who breaks the rules of how things are done, and asks the children to think, to dream, yes, even to imagine. All the children respond with enthusiasm – but Ishaan does not.

Ram decides that Ishaan is not abnormal but special. With time, patience and care, he helps Ishaan discover himself and his potential.

And so after a father who according to Ishaan ‘gets angry when my teachers complain, and thinks going to a boarding school will teach discipline,’ his mother who cares for him but thinks that ‘boarding school will be for his good’, an elder brother who is a genius and wins lots of prizes and looks after him and teachers who think he misbehaves and put red marks all over his books, Ishaan finds Nikumbh sir very different. In his words, “He likes the same things that I do and taught me many new things that are also fun. When I grow up I want to be like Nikumbh sir.” Of course there is also Rajan, Ishaan’s clever and always helpful best buddy.

Taare Zameen Par is Aamir Khan’s gift to every child with a powerful message film for parents and a compassionate look at special children like dyslexics. Conceived, researched and edited by Deepa Bhatia and written by Amole Gupte who is also its creative director, the film is produced and directed by Aamir Khan with music by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. Prasoon Joshi writes the lyrics.

The film stars Aamir Khan, Darsheel Safary as Ishaan, Tanay Cheda, Sachet Engineer, Tisca Chopra and Vipin Sharma.

Return of hanuman

It’s time for “The Return of Hanuman”, the new and numerology-wise correct title, to hit the screens on December 28. Earlier called “Hanuman Returns”, it is Hindi cinema’s first animation sequel, and so far since 2006, all sequels have been bigger blockbusters than their originals!

Percept Picture Company, which produced “Hanuman”, the 2005 hit, is however positioning “The Return Of Hanuman” in a very different way. Looking at a global release (they have even announced a third in the series already) they are projecting and marketing (!) Hanuman as India’s original superhero and not just a deity.

The script is thus about Hanuman telling Lord Brahma that he wants to come and live on earth and enjoy like all the kids here are doing. Brahman agrees to his wish and Hanuman is born to a pandit and his wife Sheila. The name Maruti is given by his parents when they immediately realize that this is no ordinary child but an “avtaar” of Lord Hanuman. And Maruti (with his insatiable appetite and penchant for falling in trouble along with extraordinary powers) soon has to save humankind.

Maruti’s friends Munni, Minkoo and Daddu are his chums, while the villains are the evil One-Eyed man, Guru Shukracharya, Rahu-Ketu and Aghori. Narad Muni and Lords Barhma and Vishnu also feature in the film.

In a complete surprise, the film is directed and co-written (with Amit Babbar) by Anurag Kashyap of Black Friday and No Smoking fame. Says Kashyap, “My daughter kept asking me why I made films that she could not watch, and she loved the film “Hanuman”. So it was a miracle when I was offered the film!’

While the animation director is Upendra Desai the animation is carried out by Toonz Animation. The music director of the original film Tapas Relia scores the contemporary songs of the film. Lyrics are written by Satish Mutatkar

Aasman Ko Chukar (Singer: Daler Mehndi)
Rating: 7.5/10
Daler Mehndi sets the pace of fun filled Return of Hanuman with the spunky Aasman Ko Chukar. The song describes the notorious character of Bal Hanuman. The rhythm is pacy with the inclusion of a catchy chorus, something that should be used as the theme in the movie.

Blackhole (Singer: Adnan Sami, Mangal Mishra, Vijay Prakash)
Rating: 7/10
With title as Blackhole, one wonders whether it is a English track in the offering but no, it is a soft musical track sung wonderfully by Adnan Sami, Mangal Mishra and Vijay Prakash. Here, the stomach of Lord Hanuman is described as the black hole, as he cleans up every edible item down his stomach.

Dhishum Dhishum (Singer: Shravan Suresh)
Rating: 6/10
Rendered by child singer Sharavan Suresh, Dhishum Dhishum holds its own place in the soundtrack because of its interesting lyrics, meant to make children smile with the animation on the silverscreen. All in all, Dhishum Shishum will be liked mostly by the children.

Dhishum Dhishum – Karaoke
Rating: 6/10
Its a simple instrumental of Dhishum Dhishum. All little champs may get a mike for themselves and start crooning Dhishum Dhishum.

Hanuman Chalisa (Singer: Armaan Malik, Baby Aparna, Shravan Suresh, Sneha Khanwlkar)
Rating: 8/10
Starting with the keystrokes of piano, and sung by little singers makes Hanuman Chalisa a different experience. The music adapts a low tempo, keeping the soothing effect of the prayer in mind.

Medley – Instrumental
Rating: 6/10
The musical blend of all the tracks in the soundtrack results in a mediocre Medley, which is quite slow to start on but picks up pace towards the latter half to recollect sme of the interesting pieces of music heard in the album so far.

Superstar (Singer: Francois, Hrishikesh Kamerkar, Neuman, Samantha, Shaznine)
Rating: 6/10
Sung by Francois, Hrishikesh Kamerkar, Neuman, Samantha and Shaznine, Superstar is situational and descriptive. Sung at a quick pace by the singers, energizing the atmosphere. The song will catch up with the high quality animation.
